In a recent LinkedIn post, the speaker and author Bob Burg explored the intersection of personal joy and service to others, urging entrepreneurs and leaders to reflect on their purpose.
“We want to contribute and know that we make a difference,” Burg wrote. “That feeling brings us joy.”
Burg noted that the human experience is not an either/or between self-fulfillment and service to others. Instead, he described how joy often emerges when individuals see themselves as part of something larger and use their work to add value to others.
“As entrepreneurs, salespeople, leaders, we do that in large part through our work,” he explained. “We may not find joy in every aspect of our work…but the more we keep in mind why we’re doing what we do, and the difference we can potentially make doing it, the more joy we are bound to have…in the journey itself.”
Burg is a Hall of Fame keynote speaker and co-author of The Go-Giver, a bestselling book that emphasizes providing value as a pathway to success.
