“Your mitochondria start screaming for more energy, which causes more sugar cravings and a vicious cycle,” Dave Asprey wrote in a post on X.
Biohacker and entrepreneur Dave Asprey warned that drinking sugar-filled soda can disrupt energy levels and lead to repeated sugar cravings. He outlined a three-step physiological response to sugary beverages in a recent post on X.
“Your blood glucose spikes and you get a burst of energy,” Asprey wrote. “Your blood glucose falls rapidly and you get a major energy crash. Your mitochondria start screaming for more energy, which causes more sugar cravings and a vicious cycle.”
Asprey urged readers to break this cycle by avoiding sugary sodas altogether.
“Instead of falling for this, replace your soda with sparkling mineral water, which will help keep you hydrated and won’t have any effects on your blood glucose,” he added.
The blood sugar rollercoaster described by Asprey is consistent with known effects of consuming high-glycemic foods. A rapid increase in glucose can trigger a strong insulin response, which may lead to a crash in energy and stimulate further cravings—particularly for sugar or carbohydrates.
