Mark Sisson: ‘When you have a higher-level motivation…that’s when the magic happens’

“Getting fast is good for everyone and everything, not just running fast,” said Mark Sisson in a post on X. “@pntrack talks about golfers improving their swing through sprint training. I’ve seen 75-year-olds become younger by sprinting once a week. Do it safely, but do it.”

In a post on X, health and fitness entrepreneur Mark Sisson reflected on the role of core motivations in shaping his career and life. Sisson wrote that he always sought “total freedom,” starting from childhood when he took on odd jobs like mowing lawns and delivering newspapers to earn his own money.

Sisson said he knew he wanted to be his own boss and work in health, fitness, and human performance. Over time, those goals merged into a mission to improve the health and fitness of millions. “When you have a higher-level motivation, something that speaks to your inner soul like freedom… that’s when the magic happens,” he wrote.

Before selling his company, Primal Kitchen, for $200 million, Sisson said he had already achieved the freedom he valued — spending time with family, coaching Little League, and enjoying activities like paddle boarding. He noted that freedom was “the path itself” rather than a destination.

Sisson is the founder of Primal Kitchen, a food company known for its paleo-friendly and whole-food-based products. He is also the author of several books on ancestral health and nutrition.
