Dave Asprey Decoded: His five-step process to release emotional triggers

Dave Asprey is the founder of Bulletproof and Upgrade Labs and is considered one of the pioneers of the biohacking movement. He is a four-time New York Times bestselling author focused on helping people extend their healthspan and optimize performance.

Biohacker and entrepreneur Dave Asprey has outlined a five-step process for releasing emotional triggers—those unconscious reactions that can hijack performance, health, and relationships. In a recent blog post titled “How I Release Emotional Triggers”, Asprey describes the method he uses to reclaim calm and clarity in high-stress moments.

“You can’t control what triggers you,” he writes. “But you can control how you reset.”

Asprey’s system, developed after years of self-experimentation and work with top emotional health practitioners, involves five clear steps: Recognize, Breathe, Feel, Reprogram, and Choose. The first step is becoming aware of the trigger in real-time. Then, through deep breathing, somatic awareness, and reflective questioning, users can interrupt the emotional pattern and reframe the response. The final step involves making a conscious choice about how to act, rather than reacting from a conditioned script.

This technique, he says, has helped him avoid repeating old emotional cycles, build deeper resilience, and stay focused under pressure.

Asprey—best known as the founder of Bulletproof and a leader in the biohacking movement—has long advocated for integrating emotional regulation with physical optimization. He argues that the nervous system is the hidden operating system behind performance, and emotional mastery is the upgrade most people miss.

His blog includes free resources and downloads to guide readers through the full reset process. “When you learn to release your triggers,” Asprey says, “you stop living from the past—and start designing the future.”
