‘Carnivore Diet’ Doctor: ‘Our country cannot produce enough of our own beef to feed ourselves’

Dr. Shawn Baker, author of the Carnivore Diet, raised concerns about food sovereignty and national security in a recent post, warning that the U.S. now relies on other countries to meet its domestic beef demand.

“Today the United States is a net importer of beef,” said Shawn Baker, MD in a post on X. “This means our country cannot produce enough of our own beef to feed ourselves. This is a national security issue. Please share and tag appropriately.”

Baker’s post highlights growing anxieties among food independence advocates, particularly those focused on regenerative agriculture and meat-based nutrition. The issue has also drawn attention from policymakers concerned about the vulnerability of U.S. supply chains and the centralization of food production.

According to data from the USDA, the U.S. has in recent years increased its beef imports from countries like Brazil, Canada, and Australia—raising debates about the quality, sourcing, and long-term impact of relying on foreign meat supply.

Shawn Baker, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and prominent advocate of the carnivore diet. He is the author of The Carnivore Diet and a leading voice in the movement to promote meat-based nutrition, metabolic health, and decentralized food systems.
