Fitness expert Dan Go is challenging the popular belief that eating only when you feel hungry is the best approach to nutrition.
“Waiting until you get hungry until you eat is a myth,” Go posted on LinkedIn.
Go explained that hunger isn’t always a clear signal that the body needs food. According to him, there are three types of hunger: physical hunger, which signals the body’s true need for energy; taste hunger, which is driven by cravings for specific flavors or textures; and emotional hunger, where eating is triggered by feelings rather than physical need.
“In modern times, most people are so overfed that they are experiencing taste hunger and emotional hunger — not physical hunger,” Go said.
He emphasizes that feeling hungry isn’t necessarily a problem — and in some cases, it’s a positive sign, particularly for those aiming to lose fat. “Many times, especially when it’s nighttime, it’s a sign that things are working,” he said.
To avoid mistaking emotional or taste-driven cravings for true physical hunger, Go advises individuals to drink water or tea, stay occupied, and let the feeling pass. “Most times you’ll forget you were hungry in the first place,” he concluded.
